Modifying display colors

Is there a way (through settings dialogs or registry
settings, whatever) to modify the background and text
color of the row & column headings?

I'm not sure exactly what you are doing, but it sounds like
you should be using conditional formatting. It's easy to
use. Do some reading on that subject in the help file.

Not for Excel alone.

You can change Themes through Windows, but that affects all programs on the
computer including Windows itself.

You could hide the row and column headers through Tools>Options>View then
design your own headers in row 1 and column A
