Modify Canon Printer to accept DVD/CDs

J

John Hess

I was told that Epson is the only company that is allowed to sell printers
in the US that will print on printable DVDs and CDs. I was also told that
quite often the printers from Canon, if sold in other countries have the
abilty to print DVDs and CDs. Apparently the only part missing from the US
printer is the slide to hold the DVD or CD while it is being printed and
that this part plus the missing software drivers can be obtained from Canon
suppliers in other countries.

Has anyone made this modification and if so would you please share your
experince with me.

Thanks

John

You don't have to get a driver from another country, the stock one
works perfectly well.
Support limited to these models
* * iP3000 iP3000
* iP4000 iP4000
* iP5000 iP5000
* iP6000 iP6000
* iP8500 iP8500
* MP750 MP750
* * MP760 MP760
* MP780 MP780
* iP4200 iP4200
* * iP5200 iP5200
* iP6600 iP6600
* MP500 MP500
* MP800 MP800
* MP830 MP830
* MP950 MP950

I can speak personaly only for the ip3000, mp760, and ip5200. Any I
series, even if it did support cd printing, I have little info on, and
the little I do have is in german. Those parts are harder to find,
where the pixma series just needs a tray. Buy one off e-bay or build
your self out of a box of corn flakes.

There is a very long thread at Steve's Digicam at:
http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=36631&forum_id=40

Wade through this, toward the end someone posts the details of how to
change the setting to enable the tray. Also presented are measurements
for making a tray and various links to eBay and elsewhere to buy real
trays.

That link has all the info including how to mod the canons. I bought a
canon pixima 1p4200 and made the tray from cardboard based on the
directions on this site.

Works perfectly.

Plus, there is additional software from canon that does everything in
the process, including titles and the image. I had other programs to do
the job, but the canon software did it better and it is free.

Only problem with the canons is ink cost, but I refill, so no issue
there. You can buy a new ip4200 for almost the cost of a complete set of
carts- which I did. So now I have a spare set of carts, spare print head
and printer. BTW, the 4200 is a great printer. I have had no issues with it.

Thanks to your inquiry about the conversion it got me thinkin'. I
immediately ordered a tray "kit" on eBay for one of my Canon printers.
I'll install it in my iP5000 since it can print the highest quality
photo and graphic images. Now I need to order some printable CDRs/DVDs.
