modification not allowed because the selection is locked

I have recieved this message today. I was trying to open a file that had the
icon of a white paper, but i tried to open it with MS word. However, the
program didnt open possibly because Word is not the correct program. After
trying this, i tried to open a new file and type, but when i pressed buttons,
the message "This modification is not allowed because the selection is
locked." I cant even finish a project i was working on! Please, if someone
knows what to do, send me an email ([email protected]) or response to this,

You won't get an answer in email (that's not the way these discussion groups
work), but you'll get plenty of spam!

You haven't told us what version of Word you're using, but if it's Word 2003
or 2007, is it a trial version that has expired? Have you activated the
product?
