modification is not allowed because the document is locked

Word will not allow me to modify any of my documents it just gives me the
message above - I have not set the 'lock' up so I don't know how to turn it
off...please help!
 
Either you have not activated your Office software, or you have an expired
trial version of Office 2003. What happens if you start Word and click on
Help | Activate Product?
