modem used to work

My HP 5495 laptop modem used to work. All of a sudden with no reason it
stopped working. It only produces on the screen: "Prepare for dialing".
Laptop troubleshooting did nothing, it declares: "Modem works
properly". Is anybody could give a hint?

Check the phone line connected to the modem, connect it to the phone and
see if you get a dial tone.
Try another modem.
