I am using windows XP Pro, and i am connected to the web
via broadband cable and i do not use the phone line.

However, when i start my pc the old internal dial-up
modem keeps trying to dial and connect on boot-up. The
modem is not connected to anything, but why does it keep
trying to do this?

Thanks, Justin

Hi,

This happens because some application was configured to use the default settings and that default settings is the modem,

so u will have to find where all the modem settings are applied to and then reconfigure them to use the broadband seettings instead. To begin wiht you can go to Internet explorer and then check ur connection to use the broadband settings as default or never to use anything.

The modem never used to do this, and when I checked the
settings in explorer, everything is fine. I think some
rogue program has made its way into the computer and is
trying to auto dial the modem. It dials on boot-up and
even when I have not opened explorer!

OK, Here's my suggestion:
You're connecting on broadband? GET RID OF THE MODEM! If it's a card, pull
it out, if it's hardwired on the MOBO, then disable it in the hardware tree!
Problem solved, if your comp doesn't see the modem, then it won't try to
dial with it!

Sorry, forgot to add, MANY programs will try to access the internet - auto
updates for anti virus software are notorious for looking for a connection
(this is actually a good thing, keeps you up to date), and usually your dial
up programs are set to automatically open if any program is trying to access
the net.
