Modem Slow Download

I wonder if anyone can advise me what I am doing wrong.
I am using Win XP, and recently had to reinstall XP over the top of
the one that was allready there because Powertoys for XP would not
work.

Now Powertoys works o.k, but since then my download speed for my modem
had slowed right down. Previously I would get speeds in the region of
4.5 to 5KB/Sec, now it is down to about 1.8KB/Sec. If I hold the
cursor over the 2 little icons on the taskbar next to the time, it
says I am connected at 49 or 50KB/Sec. I have checked all the settings
for the modem (Dynalink Internal) downloaded the lastest driver, tried
another ISP, all without any sucess. Could the modem be faulty? yet it
seems to be going o.k.

Any help would be appreciated.

Alan,

This could be any number of things and is really difficult to diagnose
properly.

First, on dialup, 49-50K is pretty darn good. There are plenty of
parts of the world that you can't even dream of that speed so you are
doing good.

I'm just going to post a "laundry list" of thing that you should think
about or try.

1. It could be that something went wrong with your upgrade.
2. have you tried to uninstall/reinstall the TCP/IP stack? (See
point #1)
3. It could be something in the PSTN changed and that is the best you
can get now.
4. Your ISP may have changed something again causing this to be the
best you can get. (Have you contacted them to see what they have to
say?)

I know it's not much help but some things to think about. As far as
your modem being faulty, I doubt it. Most modems I've seen die a
quick, hard death and don't linger on.
