Modem jams up system

I am sorry I lost the previous thread so am using a new one. this is about
my modem which when connected to the internet(dial up) jams my system up. I
cannot access anything for about 1-2 minutes. As suggested earlier there are
no conflicts and also i tried using process explorer, but that did not show
any extra process just after the connection is established. It shows the
iexplorer.exe process when i initiate it but the application does not start.
hmm..any more ideas guys? thanks for your help till now.

Do you have a nic in the computer that is not connected to a network? If
there is one disable it in device manager. Not being connected to a network
will cause it to hang the connection for time out periods...

i think i spoke too soon. back to the same problem after i rebooted. the nic
is disabled. any other ideas? thanks
