modem is required for serial communication?

I want to confirm if modem is required to be installed for serial
communication? If I want to get data through the serial port in PC, modem
must be installed. Otherwise, it won't work. Correct?

please advise!

No. There are devices which can connect directly to a serial port
without any intervening modem, so it depends on what you want to
get data from.
