Modem Driver

Robin

I posted this a while back and didn't get any reply's so thought I'd try
again ...

I have a Toshiba Satellite with an internal modem. I want to uninstall the
hardware specific drivers on the modem and install generic ones. This is
what happens:
1. I delete the modem
2. I select to ADD a modem and choose "Don't detect, I will select from a
list"
3. From List, I select 'Standard 56000 bps Modem"
4. Click Next then I get a window that says "On which ports do you want to
install it"
- 'Selected Ports' is selected, and is the only option. But there are
not any ports listed to select from.

Any suggestions????? Thx!

Do you have the ports enabled? Check your setup options for your laptop or
go into BIOS to enable the serial ports.

You can not use the generic if the specific one was installed. XP remembers
the last configured drivers.

Laptop hardware is often v.picky about the drivers used, as often the
sys.manu. will have tweaked the hardware

Can't seem to figure out how to enable the ports. Went into the CMOS and
that wasn't helpful.

Original problem is that I need to use a different driver (generic) than the
hardware manufacturer specific driver. The generic, if I could get it to
stop just auto-installing the specific driver, should work. I have spoken
to other people who have also had difficulty with the specific drivers and
have found the generic's work better. In Windows 98 I don't have a problem
doing this and making it work. I'm new to XP and although it should be
capable of letting me install hardware the way I want to, it doesn't seem to
allow it.

Uninstall the device, reboot, when the hardware wizard starts, cancel and
search / install drivers manually.
I have found, with a sony laptop that an origonal sony modem driver works ok
but the updated sony modem driver gave problems. I rolled back the driver.
