I installed XP and removed Win98 from my older 'puter, but I can't get it to
detect the existing modem; so, I can't get a dial-up connection. I don't
have the original software for the modem. Is there anything that I can do
to get my 'puter to find the old (existing) modem. I can get it to go thru
the motions and install a "standard 56k modem," but it still doesn't
communicate with that setting.

Greetings --

Download and install the WinXP-specific drivers from the modem's
manufacturer's web site.

As I can't get to the modem, I am unable to download the modem's WinXP
drivers. Hell, I don't even know the modem's manufacturer. I guess I'm
left with buying a new modem?

Buying a new modem would probably be a good thing to do . Your older Win 98
modem may not have XP drivers and would be incompatible with your new
operating system. Jym

Considering how cheap modems are, this might be the least painless route. Or
you could take the modem out, take it to somewhere with an internet
connection, and go hunting drivers for it.

Hi Mark.

Try going to Start > Run > devmgmt.msc
This will open device manager, go to View > and check 'show hidden
devices.'

If you see a modem, delete it, reboot, and let windows try to detect
and install it.

You might also right click on My computer, choose properties, go to
hardware and select the 'find new hardware' wizard. See the list of
hardware installed in your system, if you see a modem, delete it and
let the wizard detect it and try to install it.

Good luck

Roger,

I appreciate your help and the help of all others!

I'm a complete 'puter idiot, and thought that I could simply replace Win98
with WinXP on another of my 'puters. I was informed today by the systems
folks at ASU that I couldn't do this, as I have already "activated" XP in my
DELL and I can't "activate" it on any of my other 'puters. As I am on staff
at ASU, they said that they would straighten things out for me and set me
back up with Win98, and repair my modem problems.

Thanks again,

Mark --would be sanitary engineer--

I cant figure out how to post this in a different section so here goes:

I got a new laptop on friday, started it, played with it, connected to the internet...you know...the whole 9-yards. So then, monday morning i get this message that says that i cant log on to the internet because my modem cant make a 'connectoid' (wtf is that!?) and that i need to uninstall and install my modem. That would work if i actually knew where it was, what it was, and HOW TO UN/INSTALL IT! i would deeply appreciate ANY help you could provide me with. I need my internet back....
