The browsers just call on whatever default streaming-media player
you've associated with streams -- something like MPC, WinAmp, Windows
Media Player -- to handle it.
I'm not sure why MPC isn't handling it for you: have you got it
blocked from accessing the internet or something?
Try this stream in MediaPlayerClassic: it's the low-fi stream of CBC
Radio 2, and MPC opens and streams it fine for me (I'm using version
6.4.8.2):
Doesn't work. Windows can't find a media player, which is weird as
RealAudio causes no problems with MPC/RealAlternative. Obviously it's
a protocol handling problem, but how to deal with it?

Have you tried starting MPC and then doing a Ctrl-O and copy/paste
the URL into the box marked 'open'? If this works manually, it might
suggest you have a problem with file associations.
The above link opens in WMP (by default) and MPC (manually) for me.
I have acquired two different versions of Media Player Classic which came
with different codec downloads. Both open
mms://wm05.nm.cbc.ca/cbcr2-toronto-low/audio without difficulty. I've tried
opening several mms:// streams in Winamp 5.1 and every time the complete
system freezes -- I have to cut the power supply and re-boot. Has anyone
found a way to play mms:// streams in Winamp.
