MMC is broken so Computer Management, Event Viewer, etc. don't work

MMC appears to be broken. Event Viewer and Component
Services crash and generate an error report. The
Computer Management window opens but is frozen.

I discovered this after installing a new disk drive, and
couldn't use MMC to format it (although a utility from
Seagate got the drive online).

I don't know if installing the drive caused the problem,
of it that's just when I noticed it. I tried "rolling
back" to a previous restore point, but MMC was still
broken.

For whatever it's worth, Norton's Win Doctor says these
files are missing:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\MAPISRVR.EXE" cannot access a
necessary file, "gapi32.dll."

"C:\Program Files\Common
Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0700\Intel32
\DotNetInstaller.exe" cannot access a necessary
file, "mscoree.dll."

"C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{5783F2D7-0203-0409-0000-
0060B0CE6BBA}\Acad_icon.exe" cannot access a necessary
file, "mscoree.dll."

Any ideas?

Thanks much,

John S.

what happens when you type mmc.exe from the RUN box and press enter.
Any message in the event viewer?

Dave

If I run mmc.exe, it runs, but if I try to open
eventvwr.msc or any of the other 2 broken ones, the same
problems happen.

Unfortunately, since event viewer is one of the broken
ones, I don't know what it says. I'm sure the answer is
in there.

thanks,

.. . . and the answer is:

go to Start>Run type sfc /scannow. Have your WinXP CD
in the cdrom drive.
