The attachment can't be read in wordpad, but now every
time I try to download it, I don't get to choose what
format to download it in. How can I download it into
Word? (Trying to change the the wordpad document to Word
just results in drivel.) Help!

I have never tried this but, is there a way to click on the attachment and
then "save the attachment" elsewhere rather than choosing to "open it"? Then
(this may seem round-about, but as I've said, I've never had reason to try
it.) open a Word document and add that attachment to it. Then try opening
the attachment. I of course assume that this attachment is also a *known*
attachment, and was initially *scanned for viruses*. It would be unwise to
try to open *any* attachment, if one does not know the who's, where's, and
why-fores of it.

In what operating system?
You change the association of the file type to open in Word instead of
Wordpad.

Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Alan, while you are here, may I ask if for instance in Wordpad this
attachment that is being referred to by the OP, were now "embedded" in
wordpad, could one cut and then paste it into Word? I tried an experiment
whereby I embedded a .jpg image into Wordpad, and then cut and pasted it to
my desktop and it opened fine. Would that work in the OP's case?

I think you are on the wrong tack (or I am).

The attachment is a file (probably a .doc file) that is associated to
open with Wordpad. It is not an embedded object like your embedded
image. The attachment can be opened in Word instead. There is no need
to cut and paste.

More likely than not, you are the he who's sailing smooth, whilst I'm
heading into the wind on this one. I just brought that hypothesis (or
whatever you might call it) up as it seemed that Wordpad doesn't have the
same options as does Outlook/Word as editor. I don't use Wordpad very often,
and I didn't see the ability to add or get an attachment as one would with
Outlook or Outlook Express. Admittedly as I've said, I've used it but few
times.
But of course with W98/se (probably W98 as well) one would follow your
Start>settings>folder options>file types and correct that in this manner, as
you had stated.

But as you've said. if it's a .doc file (for example), then I understand
what the problem was.

Thanks Alan, I appreciate any opportunity to learn.

I think that we need a better description of what exactly
you are seeing. Is there a link you can right-click?
Is there then a Save As... menu option? If so, you should be
able to save the file with whatever name you like by overriding
the name that is suggested by the dialog.

Alternatively, regardless of the name you may be able
to drag the file to whatever application you wish.
The application may be able to detect that the file is
in a format that it can use. Certainly that would be a way
to cause files with an extension of .doc to be opened
by either Word or WordPad, depending on the actual
file format that such a file contained.
