missing .wav sounds?

A little help needed.. I've recently upgraded and formatted my PC because it
was really messed up. I had a new graphics card installed, extra bits and
pieces, the works. When i checked the driver for my soundcard (C-Media AC97
Audio Device) i found that it was uot of date, so i updated it to the latest
version (5.12.1.45) dated 29/06/2004, because i found that the volume of
music played on my PC was considerably smaller compared to before i had the
upgrade.

Trouble is, now my PC hasn't got any startup sounds, error sounds or
anything of the sort. When i play Mp3 files its okay, but all the other
sounds aren't functioning. For example: when you play Spider Solitaire there
are sounds accompanying the cards as they move and a 'victory music' played
if you win the round but its all gone in my PC. The sound files aren't
missing wither cause i did a search and found that all the files are present
AND working when i tried playing them in Windows Media Player. Games are
affected as well, e.g. i'm playing the game Singles : Flirt Up Your Life and
while the background music is playing well enough, the dialogues aren't there
at all.

The file format for the XP sounds are all in .wav format, which is whats in
common for all the missing sounds. What's wrong with my PC?

Go to Control Panel | Sounds. On the Sound tab, check that under
"Sound Scheme," "No sounds" isn't selected.

I did a DirectX checkup on myu PC at random, and i found this error:

Sound Tab 1: DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User
verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

Now what's wrong with my PC?

Go to Windows Update and install the latest Direct X version which is 9c I
think.

I was able to rollback to the previous driver and everything worked fine.

Don't understand why the new driver, downloaded from MS XP Updates, will
not work. I've tried all the suggestions and more.

Tks,
Bob

It is often better to go with drivers downloaded from the manufacturer's
site rather than use a driver from Windows Update Site. Check the
manufacture's site to see if they have an update if you feel you need one.
However it sounds like the old driver is working. I would listen to what the
system is telling me and just stay with what works.
