Missing systray icons

I have some programs running in the background which normally put an icon
in the systray but these icons diappear after a time. Why does this happen,
is there any way to prevent it happening, and how do I gain access to them
once they have disappeared?

I do not have 'Hide inactive icons' on and when I do activate that I often
don't get the '<<' to see the hidden icons.

Win XP Pro.
