Missing system tray icons

Though ALL itmes in "Start-up" (in msconfig) are checked,
only 4-5 icons show up in the system tray in the lower
right corner. They are not there even when I click on the
arrow to "un-hide" icons.
This is a situation which occured suddenly, and without
me installing any new soft- or hardware.
One example is the speaker volume, which is missing
despite it being checked in Sounds and Adio Properties to
show up in the task bar.
I have tried to un-check all items in the start-up menu
(in msconfig), restarted, then checked them all,
restarted, but still missing most of the icons.
How can I retrieve the missing icons?
