I have two computers each running Win'XP Home. When I right click a folder
on one of the systems I get a menu that includes an entry for "Sharng and
Security ....". This is the proper operation. On the other system right
clicking a folder yields a menu that includes all the other entries
presented by the first computer but is missing the "Sharing and Security
...." entry. Where has it gone?

Hi Don,

You have Simple file sharing enabled on the one that is missing the entry.

Here's how to turn it off:
Open My Computer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, then click the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing
(Recommended) check box.
Click OK.

Have opened "My Computer" and clicked "Tools>Folder Options>View Tab".
There is no entry for "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" in the
Advanced Settings section. This is true on both computers: The computer
that displayed the "Sharing and Security ...." entry, and the one that did
not.

In the View tab, it's the bottom entry in that long list.

There is no bottom entry named "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" in
the list. The bottom entry is: "Show pop-up description for folder and
desktop items".

I've got Win'XP installed in three places. I've got it installed on two
different partitions on a single machine. I've also got it installed on a
single partition in a different machine. Behavior is the same in all three
installations. The last entry in the "Advanced Settings" list is "Show
pop-up description for folder and desktop items". There is no "Use simple
file sharing (Recommended)" entry in any of the lists.

On the computer that's missing the Sharing and Security tab,
check the following.

Go to Start -> Control Panel and double click Network
Connections.
Note: If you're using the Category view in Control Panel, click
on Network and Network Connections to access Network
Connections.
In Network Connections, right click on the icon for your Local
Area Connection and select Properties from the menu.
On the General tab of the Local Connection Properties sheet,
make sure "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks"
listed and checked.
If it's not listed, hit the Install button.
Select Service in the "Select Network Component Type" box.
Hit the Add button.
In Select Network Service, click on File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks.
Click OK.
Check to see if the Sharing tab is now available.

FYI, you can stop looking for an entry in File Options to
disable Simple File Sharing. That option only appears in a
system running XP Professional or Media Center Edition. Simple
File Sharing cannot be disabled on a system running XP Home
Edition. Bottom line is that your problem has nothing to do
with Simple File Sharing.

Good luck

On the general TAB of the "Local Area Connections Properties" sheet the
"File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" entry is already present
and checked. (And I didn't add it) Where do I go from here?
