Have a look at this Intel document, available for download from Asus:

http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/4GB_Rev1.pdf

That doc is for Intel, but AMD uses similar concepts. The remapping
function is inside the processor, with Athlon64. For remapping
(a.k.a. memory hoisting) to work, requires BIOS support.

This doc is the most detailed about Athlon64 functionality. There
is a small section in here on memory hoisting (pg.99). But the
info is not very enlightening. The 26094 document is addressing a
number of products at the same time, which can make interpretation
of the document a challenge.

Using a PCI video card, instead of PCI Express, would be one way
to get back some of the I/O space. Enabling hoisting and changing
your OS, is a more expensive option.

You need to enable the BIOS option for "remap memory above 4GB" or
whatever it is called, to move memory covered up by the IO space for PCI
and PCI Express devices to above the 4GB mark. Also, to see memory
remapped above 4GB, you cannot use normal Windows XP 32-bit edition. You
need either Windows 64-bit or a server version of Windows (or Linux..)
