missing pagefile

I'm trying to sort out my virtual memory, and set it to zero, re-booted, and
was supposed to find and delete the pagefile, but i can't find it anywhere.
c:\ "set" says my systemroot is "c:\windows" but it isn't there, searched for
hidden files everyhere as well.
?anyone had this before?

Are you doing this for increasing the disk space? If that is so then I will
suggest you to try other things to free up the disk space instead of turning
off the Page File as it can cause a slow performance. If you have enough RAM
then still I will recommend you not to turn off the page file. Try running
Disk Cleanup from System Tool to free up disk space.

Further, if you find the pagefile maybe you will not be able to delete it or
if you set it to 0 then Windows will automatically delete. For confirmation,
it is on the root of your C drive. To see it, click Tools - Folder Options -
uncheck the option "Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended)" and
turn on "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Hope this help, let us know!

What do you mean by "sort out my virtual memory"?

The Paging File is c:\pagefile.sys by default. It is a hidden
and a locked file. One way to see that it's there is to create
a folder called "c:\Pagefile.sys". If the paging file exists
then you cannot create such a folder.

Thanks for replying. The problem i'm having is that the PF usage is at
300-800MB even without doing much. The commit limit is 942KB. I have NAV and
SPF running, that's it. I KNOW something's up.Things are just not moving as
fast as they should, though when i play farcry(quite demanding) system works
okay. The total memory i have is 392KB,i'm running XP/sp2 with 30GB disk,P4
2.4Ghz.I've checked processexplorer,run defender and there's no mal/spy/ad
ware;quite a clean system with only decent applications installed.

First of all, you are confusing with MB and KB. You said you have a total
memory of "392KB" but I think it will be 384MB i.e. one 256MB and one 128MB
Memory Card in your System.

Windows automatically define a custom page file size that is 1.5 size of the
physical memory installed. As it seems that you have only 384MB memory and
turning off the PageFile will turn your computer more slower. So forget the
idea of PageFile.

1. Run a Disk Defragmenter on all drivers from System Tools. Will speed of
your system by organizing the data on your disk.
2. Click Start - Run - type MSCONFIG and press Enter key. Click the Startup
tab and uncheck the programs you don't need at system startup. Do it
carefully. Don't uncheck the entries of your Anti Virus and Anti-SpyWare
softwares. This will free up a good about of memory.
3. Tips for tweaking your Windows XP for faster performance. Do it carefully.

I've set windows to manage the pagefile, currently at 603Mb.My RAM
384Mb.Defrag done.
1)I took off all the services&start progs in msconfig, got :
commit 170Mb(18%),20 processes,cpu 1%
2)loaded back (in mscofig) NAV,SPFirewall, got commit 216Mb(24%),31 processes.
3)with ATI suite commit goes to 300Mb,processes 37
Don't you think this commit is too high?I wonder what could be the cause.
thanks for the trouble.

Why? There's no good reason to do that.

but i

It's not supposed to be there. It's normally in C:\

However if you turned off the page file (a bad idea, by the way), it isn't
there to delete.

There is never a benefit in not having a page file. If it isn't needed, it
won't be used. Don't confuse allocated memory with used memory.

If "things are just not moving as fast as they should," look elsewhere for
the problem. This isn't it and you're barking up the wrong tree.

You are running Norton, which is enough to ruin the performance of
just about any computer.

This post is still going!
Basically i was trying to set the page file to zero, then delete it so that
if it is corrupted that would sort it out.It was there and i deleted it.:)BUT
i then was inspired to delete NAV 2000(i know!) which was not compatible
with XP anyway(good ridence):).And Because I was getting a "Program not
responding"(from .NET 2 framework) at the time of turning xp off, I also
deleted .NET 2. NOW at least my comp. has some life in it...oh, before i did
all that, i ran three virus scans and spybot and CWshredder...I could go on.
Now is that me trying to find someone to blame?
