Missing "Out of Office" Assistant in Outlook XP

Hi

There's no "Out of Office Assistant" in the drop-down menus on my Outlook XP. I have used it extensively on OTHER computer systems so I'm quite familiar with how to use it, IF ONLY I could find it on this computer; it's my first experience with the XP suite

My configuration: XP Home Edition on data cable broadband wireless LAN at home; Dell 3.06GHz Inspiron 5150 laptop

Many thanks

If you are in an Exchange environment (ask your administrator if you do
notknow) you can set the Out of the Office Assistant which is located under
Tools.

If you are not in an Exchange environment you can create a rule that replies
on all e-mails. The downside of this is that you'll have to have your
Outlook open all the time for the rules to process. Make sure you set some
exceptions (for instance based on the subject field so it will not reply on
subject with e.g. reply, failed, undeliverable, etc...) otherwhise you could
create endless mailloops between two mailservers and those can be a real
threat to the mailservers!

Out of Office Assistant is an available feature only if you connect to Microsoft Exchange Server as your mail server. If you don't use Exchange Server, you can use Outlook Rules Wizard or one of the third-party automatic rules processing addins. See http://www.slipstick.com/rules/index.htm and http://www.slipstick.com/addins/index.htm .

Thank you both for your kind suggestions

I'm guessing that the issue has arisen because this is a stand-alone computer that does not connect to a corporate Exchange environment. It periodically checks for, and downloads, email from my ISP account with Charter. The option for Out of Office Assistant is not even visible in grey in any of the menus

Best regards

That's not a guess, it's right. Did you read the replies?

Obviously, rifleman, how else would I have known about the Exchange connection and be thanking those who responded to help me?

If you're reacting to my use of the phrase "I'm guessing", you need to get past the mannerism and understand that layfolk can't presume to have understood the stated cause with certainty. Hence the tentativeness of tone.

Hope this helps clarify whatever confusion caused your posting.
