missing or corrupted system file

I just re-booted after my network stopped responding and
my screen came up with "the following file is missing or
corrupted WINXP/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM" If I remember
right from the pre-registry days, the system file
contained a great deal of info, so I'm guessing that
attempting to restore the file from the setup cd is a
lost cause, am I right? BTW, I attempted to boot from
the last known good point using the boot menu with no
success.
thanks
