Missing or corrupted files at start up

When my WindowsXP starts up on my laptop I get two error msgs one after the
other:
SIFX.exe corrupted or missing.
SIFXINST.exe corrupted or missing. Does anyone know what these files are? I
have tried to locate these files on my desktop so I could find out where they
should be copied to on my laptop. But SEARCH reveals nothing. Any ideas?
The fact that these files are missing or corrupted doesn't seem to affect the
performance of the computer, it's just very annoying to have to punch through
these error messages each time I start up.

My own guess is malware.
