Missing or corrupt file

On bootup windows XP home edition fails with the
message: "could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system"
I tried to repair using original CD-ROM and recovery
console but still gives same error. Is there any way to
recover or must I reformat and reinstall windows XP ?
 
Hi~ I have EXACTLY the same problem. I also tried to
reboot using SAFE MODE and it doesn't work either. If
anyone could share any insights or solutions that would be
greatly appreciated.

A "Hive" of the registry is corrupted. Microsoft has a KB
article on how to recover from this situation. However, the
problem is likely to re-appear. Sometimes this error is due
to a problem with the motherboard BIOS. The procedure
is very technical and not designed for casual users. A simple
"Repair" install should remedy the Registry hive. However,
your system probably has a defect/fault that can cause this
problem to re-occur. The support article can be found at
