when i try to open a jpeg on my account in xp home edition, there is no
programme available, i select one from the drop down list and tick the box to
select this option everytime but it still happens each time i try again,
there are three other accounts on this computer and none of them are affected
with the same problem, i have tried reinstalling from the disc..no change,
tried virus checking, none found, run spyware programmes, no problems...am
now at a total loss?? any suggestions

have you looked at the file types option with in windows??? tools, folder
options, file types, look at the jpg & jpeg fiels types and reset them back
to default to see if this helps, cheers pete ;-)

in the list of file type options there is no mention of jpeg..jpg ...or any
other...only bitmap

thanx...i run the bat file but unfortunatley it hasn,t changed my jpeg
problem, i think it is because jpeg or jpg orjpe are not listed in the file
association options, i have tried adding them as a new file option and
assigning them to open with various programmes such as paint etc but the
information does not change, i have clicked on the advanced button when i
have tried to put the new file on but nothing happens there either??

the jpegs open with any programme i select from the list but they cannot be
associated with any particular programme, when i look at properties of my
jpeg files it says "open with unknown" if i could only get the jpeg option
back into the file folder and change the open with option I think this would
solve the problem but I cannot understand why I can add jpeg as a file
extension but cannot get any response from the advanced button where i am
sure i would be able to assign a programme to open jpeg files??

Under folder options>file types, when you select "jpeg" and click on the "Advanced" button, what
happens ? On clicking the advanced button, you should be able to open the 'Edit file type' dialog,
where you can create a 'open' action and fill in the following info:

Action: Open
Application used to perform action: rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
check "use DDE"
Application: shimgvw
Topic: System

when i click on the advanced button..nothing happens, i have just tried to
open the control panel now and it has looped me straight back to the desktop,
virus checked again and nothing was found...something real strange going on
here...i have copied your text and am going offline now to investigate my new
problem...once i get back into folder options...i will give it a go...thanx
for your time

i have tried making a new file extension again...jpeg..the advanced button
works with all my other file extensions..i.e I can edit anything else except
jpeg

Hello,

These are the steps that I would follow to recreate the jpeg extension that would open with Winodws
picture and fax viewer:

1) Click on tools and folder options under any explorer window.
2) Navigate to the file types tab and click on "new" and type in jpeg and click ok
3) Now select the newly created jpeg extension and click on advanced. Click on 'new' under actions.
4) Type in the action name as "open" and under application type in: rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
5) Check the box next to "use DDE" and under application type in 'shimgvw' and under topic type in
'System'.

Click on OK. Thsi should create a 'open' action for the jpeg files.

thanx anando...but as i previously mentioned although I can create a new
'jpeg' file extension, when i click on the advanced button nothinh happens
therefore I cannot assign an action for it, all the other file extensions are
fine and if i select any of these the advanced button works
I have now downloaded the files suggested by Ramesh and will give this a try

Most likely caused by incorrect registry permissions.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg

Right-click and choose Permissions

Add "Administrators" to the list, and give them "Full Control"

Repeat the same for the following branches:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile

If that does not help, download "AccessEnum" from Sysinternals.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/AccessEnum.html

Generate the Permissions information for the above three registry keys. Post
the log file here.

Then you need to add the association. Help & Support tells how.

there are no permissions just "the handle is invalid"
i am going to have a look in the registry of one of the other accounts on
this computer, although i have never edited the registry before, I think if I
enter the same on my registry as the others maybe this will cure my problem ?
