missing iso's, mp3's, etc.

Hello I am currently testing out Vista with only 9 days left until
activation then I shall decide if I will buy it.

Anyways lets get to the point here. I had Windows XP Professional
installed on my C drive and I started to install this Vista Ultimate
trial thing that a friend gave me which I have been seeking so I can
have my decision about the OS, and something strange happened.
Windows Vista made a new directory on the root of C drive called
Windows.old and put my program files, documents and settings, and my
old windows directory into it. When Vista was completed it was a very
neat OS and I've experienced almost no problem with it except for some
minor incomparability's with some programs but its not that big of a
deal. I went to install my APC Fingerprint scanner and the .ISO CD
image was gone, just simply gone as well as the APC battery backup
software, and EVERY OTHER ISO that I had on my hard drive, all my game
backups, office backups, everything! For some reason later my Vista
crapped out and I had to reinstall. While it was installing again, i
did the Command prompt shortcut (command prompt didn't see anything
before in the previous Vista installed) and found that all of my file
were back again (most of them were corrupted). I then also realized
that a large chunk of my music was also missing and some were
corrupted. After the install I look at the files and directory's that
disappeared and they have the shared icon on it as if I am sharing it
on the network, but when I go into the properties theres no sign that
its shared at all, not even when I share it then unshared it. I am
slightly angered that some of the ISO's I had were missing because
those CD's are either lost somewhere in my junk pile or scratched to
hell. And as for my music, lets hope I can remember the songs that are
missing :-(.

Vista = Hell At First, but once you get it figured out, it runs nice.
(Still want to kill it tho in sooo many ways)

Lesson learnt I hope ;-)
BACKUP before attempting anything this major on your working system my
friend.
External USB HDDs and enclusures are relativily cheap these days, get
youself one same size as your existing HDD.

yea i was thinking that too lol... but i just had no idea that such a
problem would occur haha.. but now that I think--- why didn't I
backup???? It doesn't seem like me not to back it up haha. Well I
don't know, I probably was half asleep when I did it lol. I was going
to buy another 250 gig and make it an external usb drive but never got
around to it because I am still in high-school and like most teens is
spending it left and right and didn't spend it on something useful
lol. But yes, lesson learnt indeed lol. I just never did expect a
Windows OS to do that, but thats defiantly one feature that they
forgot to talk about, like what the hell, did they just add Windows ME
and XP together this time?? Eck lol. Thanks for the reply! :)

While Microsoft is trying to force developers and users to use Microsoft's
perception of how your disk drive should be used - as in Documents,
Pictures, Music, etc. in Vista, and I agree that using those common folders
makes securing Windows easier for Microsoft, it is really odd that they
would make that requirement retroactive when you upgrade. Did you even get
a warning that all of your data would be wiped out? I am guessing not
because Microsoft assumed it was all in My Documents, My Pictures, and My
Music.

it did tell me that it detected a windows installation and it did move
all my stuff to another drive, but i mean the stuff thats missing was
scattered all throughout my drive, example : c:\old_isos
\commandandconquer.iso . The corruption may have been my fault,
because it was trying to do a check disk and my friend rebooted my
computer when it jumped to that screen, so could be. Windows was just
simply hiding my files and teasing me, then now that I have then,
theres a permanent share icon on it when it isn't shared. Windows is
becoming alive or something and it hates my guts lol..
