Missing icons

When I boot up I only receive the Wall paper. I bring up
the task bar and switch to new task at which point I open
up note pad. Once I close note pad all the desktop icons
appear. I do not even receive the start button. I have
checked to make sure that show icons on desktop is
clicked on. This only happens when I reboot or start the
computer. Can anyone please help.

Try downloading and installing the Microsoft utility TweakUI for Windows XP,
which can be gotten at:

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After installing TweakUI for Windows XP, click your Start button/All
Programs/Powertoys for Windows XP/TweakUI for Windows XP. When TweakUI
opens, in the left pane click: Repair, and in the right pane select: Rebuild
Icons, then click the Repair Now button.
