Missing Icons on XP Taskbar

When the XP system comes up, my start Icons appear on the
left of the taskbar as usual. However, when I start an
application, the relevent Icon fails to appear on the
taskbar. I have restored to a previous date which appears
to cure the problem, but the problem reoccurs at the next
boot up. The only way for me to go back to an opened
application is via the task manager - can anyone help?
