missing file on floppy disk

Hi experts,

I have this strange problem which just surfaced. I copy a
file from my PC to a floppy disk. I can read and use this
file when I use the floppy disk on my laptop. However,
when I copy a file from laptop to PC using the same floppy
disk to transfer, the file that I copied from laptop is
GONE ! The file originally copied from PC is still on the
floppy. This happens for any file copied from laptop to PC
via the floppy disk and tests using different floppy disks
gave same result.... Any ideas, people ? Both laptop and
PC are running Win2k Prof.

I suspect you're not really copying but you have some
application (e.g. Word, Excel) open and you're using
the "Save as" function. The result is that your file is
still open, and the floppy disk is in an undetermined
state.

It is not a good idea to open files on removable media.
Copy them to the hard disk before opening them, then
copy them back to the floppy disk when finished, making
sure that you close the application BEFORE you copy
the file.

Hi Pegasus,

Thanks for your reply. The file can be text, Word .. etc.
File is not open and is already on hard disk of laptop.
Was working on laptop, saved file and closed it.
Transferred it to floppy before trying to see it on PC.

I tried a test whereby I copied a file from another PC to
my floppy. This time round I can see this file on my
floppy when I viewed it from my own PC !!. Is something
wrong with the OS on my laptop ?

One or the other or both floppy drives are bad. (head offset) Symptoms are
floppy works in the drive it was last written from but not in another drive.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Judging from your reply, it seems
that my laptop's removeable floppy drive may be faulty.
This is because I tried to read a file that I copied from
laptop to floppy on another PC and I face the same problem
ie. file copied cannot be seen and appeared to be deleted.

However, I just changed this removable floppy drive for
less than a month and it's still brand new.

Floppy drives in general never were very reliable but should have lasted
longer than a month. Take it back to where you bought it.

Before that, first remove any important files you can and then reformat the
diskette on the laptop's floppy drive. If it is a pre-formatted diskette
(i.e., you never did format it using the laptop's floppy drive) then it
could've been the manufacturer that screwed up.

Boot with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com,
then see if the problem persists. If it does then you have
a hardware problem.

Hi,
Pegasus, could you explain how a Win 98 boot disk will reveal bad hardware.
I ask out of curiousity, not doubt.
Thanks, Dan Schaffer

It's a process of elimination. If Win2000 is suspected of
having a problem when accessing a floppy disk, use a
different operating system. This will clear or implicate
Win2000, depending on the outcome.

Hi Dave,

I don't think I have a h/w problem as I managed to
duplicate the problem on another removable floppy drive
which is new. I still face the same problem of a file
being removed.

This is what I observed.. After I put the file on my
laptop's floppy drive. The file would be there so long as
I don't remove the floppy disk. Once, eject the floppy
disk and put it back, the file would be gone !!

What do you think the problem would be ?

"Hardware" includes the following things:
- The floppy disk drive
- The ribbon cable
- The power supply
- The floppy disk controller

So far you've eliminated one potential hardware problem
area. Three to go. Alternatively, take the easy way and
change operating systems for the duration of the test.

I suspect that the laptop is NOT actually writing the file to the floppy
disk but is only cached.
