Missing desktop!

I turned my computer on last night and logged onto my profile and it
appeared to start normally but after my desktop image appears but
nothing else happens. (Ie all I see is an empty screen, no windows
controls or applications) I can launch the task manager and can
therefore run individual programs Doing this I mananged to run the
virus checker and it found nothing.

I tried logging off and trying a differnt profile but I got the same
thing. After turning on and off a few times I was able to start it in
safe mode but I still ended up with the same problem.

Does anyone have any ideas how to sort this? Is it serious?

Thanks in advance

You can try a System Restore to an earlier point. If that doesn't fix
it run SFC /scannow . If that still doesn't fix the problem reinstall
Internet Explorer. I know that your problem is with Explorer.exe but
Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are hoplessly tangled up into a
Gordian Knot and broken IE files are often the cause of Explorer.exe
problems.

There is definately something wrong with the registry. I ran registryfix (I
had already had it downloaded and installed) and rebooted the computer after
it fixed all the problems with the registry and my desktop appeared after
re-start. I'm sure you can use any sort of registry fixer that is out there
and I think windows actually has one built in to it.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
