I have just had to reload all my software after a hard disk replacement and
now find that the vertical connector lines that used to be displayed in
Windows Explorer to indicate the tree structure of the folders is now
missing.

How can I restore them?

Check the following.

Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
In Folder Options, click on the View tab.
On the View page, make sure "Display simple folder view in Explorer's folder
list" is unchecked.
Click OK.

Good luck

There are no vertical connector lines in Windows Explorer on my copy of
Windows XP.

You're welcome. Thanks for letting us know you were able to fix the problem.
