EIDE Connector problem

Hi everyone, hope some one can help.
Got an old HP Compaq Presario computer running Windows XP. Lovely ol'
machine, loved it much better than this thing I've got now and want to keep
it to try Linux and anything else that comes along.

But having problems starting or running and couldn't use the cd/dvd drives.
Can see them but not open only very occasionally. Have replaced the Hardrive
as it said 'Backup or Lose the Plot', or words to that effect. Re-stored
everything from scratch when I got the CD drive working.

Anyway, mucking around testing etc, got it to start and open one cd drive.
But I think one of the EIDE connectors is not working because if I connect
anything to that connector nothing works.

Can this be fixed and is it costly job, or is it a case of a new
motherboard?

Thanks a lot, bit muddled I know but been struggling for ages.

Are you talking about the connector on the EDIT cable or the port on
the motherboard? Cables can be replaced but the port on the
motherboard is not easily repair.

Have you checked in the BIOS so as to see if the EDIT port is
activated (aka turned on?)

You are posting this problem in the wrong place. This is a hardware
problem. Google "hardware forums" (include quotes) and post some on
those, OR....

I monitor the Computer Help Forum which has a Hardware section.
