missing boot ini file

Hi,
I am a novice computer user.
I have a laptop running on Windows xp pro.
Every time I start laptop I get a message saying missing boot ini file
booting from c windows.
Can anyone explain how to rectify this in simple to follow terms.
I have xp disk.
Will I have to lose all programs etc off computer?

Is your BIOS configured to look for boot.ini on the hard drive or on
a CD? In other words, is Hard Drive or CD Drive at the head of
the device boot order?

I read the link you gave me.
I managed to get laptop to boot from cd rom got so far then got stuck it
asked for which windows installation would you like to log onto and
administrator password I have not got a clue what to do here.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

After the computer booted to the CD, did you get the "Welcome to Setup"
message?
Did you enter Recovery Console?
What did bootcfg /list show?
Did you do bootcfg /rebuild?
Did you add one XP installation to boot.ini?

Hello,
As I said I got so far and then it said which windows installation would you
like to log onto and administrator password.
I got welcome setup and recovery console but then asked the 2 questions
above and I dont know what to put in then to proceed.
