Missing Attachments

I am running Outlook 2007. My friend is running Outlook Express.

I send a lot of e-mails with attachments.

My friend can receive e-mails from other people not using Outlook 2007
containing attachments and he gets the attachments. When he receives one of
my e-mails the attachments are removed.

He has forwarded a message to me with a PDF attachment that he got from
someone else and I can read it without problem. If I forward it back to him
the attachment is stripped off.

Is this perhaps a compatibility issue between Outlook 2007 and Outlook
Express?

Is this a known problem with a known solution?

Sounds like you've configured Outlook to use Rich Text. Switch to Plain Text
or HTML-format instead.

I always use HTML.

The test message forwarded from him was HTML. The test messaged forwarded
back to him was HTML.

Further Testing ... if I send him an e-mail with a PDF attachment ...

HTML - He never receives the attachment
RTF - he never receives the attachment
Plain Text - he receives the attachment

My "assumption" is that this "feature" was introduced by an Outlook 2007
maintenance change over the last month.

What is the problem and what is the "real" solution?

i always use html too...several of my friends use different email programs
like googlemail, hotmail outlook and windows mail all have the same problem.
i cant figure out what the problem is it has only been since i have been on
vista that this has been an issue.

My friend and I are both using Windows XP SP2.

The problem started suddenly about three weeks ago. I had been using
Outlook 2007 since the day it was released.

This makes me believe that it is a new problem that was introduced into
Outlook 2007 around that time.

Do you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook? Disable this
integration and try again.

I am using ZoneAlarm Pro and I tired turning the evasive e-mail protections
on and off. I get the same result if they are on or off. They are
currently off.

Thom Little,
Sometimes turning of email scanning is not enough. For some programs, it
requires that you uninstall the program, then use the custom install for the
program, making sure that email scanning features/functions are not
selected.

i am using norton 360. i will try disabling email scanning but i dont think
it has the feature to disable out going scanning i think it disables all
scanning and i really dont relish that! it cant be a problem with all av's
maybe the issue is a MS issue and they should sort it out.

My friend contacted Road Runner and they told him it was a Microsoft
problem. He contacted Microsoft and they told him it was a Dell problem
(since he got Outlook Express with his machine). He was on hold at Dell for
an hour and they successfully sent him an e-mail with an attachment and
declared success.

My GUESS is that it is a recently induced problem in Outlook 2007 that is
creating another incompatibility with Outlook Express unless the message is
in Plain Text mode.

There is a longtime problem with Outlook and Outlook Express where if you
include an eCard (A.K.A. business card) in an Outlook message containing
attachments and sent it to Outlook Express it will loose ALL attachments.

My GUESS is that this is a new similar Microsoft "feature".

I did a little test and sent some of the emails i forward to myself at
hotmail and they arrived just fine! its not happening with every email i send
it happens more with embedded emails or slide shows. i just cant figure out
what the issue is. i have tried saving the pictures and then fowarding them
in emails but still no joy! its very frustrating to say the least!

T

Thom Little

Did you try sending them as Plain Text messages?

ok heres the gen, i collard my mate earlier and we did a little test. I sent
her an email with pictures that i had recieved earlier that day. i sent it
normally no pictures showed in email so then i turnt off email scanning on
norton 360 still no pictures. then i totally disabled firewall and no change
then i turnt firewall and email features back on and had a brainwave, i
decided to send the same email to her via windows mail. and hey presto total
email with pictures embedded arrived! so it is obviously an MS Office issue
not the firewall! does this help?

I took my question to the Outlook Express newsgroup and this is what I
learned ...

- The only format that is guaranteed to work in Outlook Express is Plain
Text.

- If you use any other format the results are unpredictable and the behavior
may change over time without warning.

- Lost (or hidden) attachments are a typical symptom of the non Plain Text
problem in Outlook Express.

- Thee is no way to directly detect a non Plain Text message in Outlook
Express.

I'm having the exact same problem also. I use Outlook 2007 (with latest
service pack) and regardless of what I use (plain text, HTML, RTF) and what
type of attachment I use ... and regardless of whether I send it from here at
work on my laptop or at home with my PC ... I'll send an email out to a group
of people and some will get the attachment and some won't. I have run many
experiments ... and 3 people that consistantly don't receive the attachment
are running:
1) Outlook Express
2) Incredimail
3) A MAC

I tried sending the exact same email here in my office from someone elses PC
who's on Outlook 2003, and everyone received it. So it's a 2007 issue, no
question. It's frustrating isn't it? If you find anything out, I'd love to
know.

Thanks!!

If the receiver of your message is using Outlook Express then you must send
the message as Plain Text if you want consistent results over time..

If you use HTML or RTF you will get different results over time and
something that worked three weeks ago may not work today.

Try sending the test message from your Outlook 2007 in Plain Text and see if
everyone receives it correctly.

Yeah had all ready tried plain and HTML and Rich. The only success I've had
this week is in sending the same email via Outlook 2003. The problem is
definitely generated from some change to the way 2007 sends the email ...
