Had a motherboard crash and the local PC shop replaced it for me. All other
components appear to be fine.

However, things don't seem "right" with XP. There are several issues, but
one is that some features of XP I had prior to the MB failure are now
missing. For example, the Communications folder under the Accessories tab on
the start menu is gone, so I can't get to the Remote Desktop. There are
others missing. Many of my programs like Quicken, etc. are on the hard
drive, but not recognized by XP.

Any ideas on what's going on? Can I avoid a reinstall?

Thanks for any help!

You can add Windows components from the Add/Remove Programs applet in
Control Panel. You will need to reinstall your programs like Quicken,
etc. from the installation media.

Hi Chris,

Sounds like XP was installed to a new folder, instead of a repair
installation. An installation would have been necessary to rebuild system
files specific to the new hardware. A repair install would have maintained
existing programs and settings, but it doesn't sound like this is what was
done. Instead it was installed to a new folder so that you still had access
to all your data and files. You will need to reinstall your preferred
software, and things like the communications folder can be re-added using
the Windows Components section of Add & Remove in the Control Panel.
