The Task Pane give directions on adding the minimize button to the top right
corner of the document...However, this does not work. Also give answer to
hide "Type question here" at the top right hand of document. This does not
work either. Hopefully there is someone out there smarter than the help
people. Can someone please help me with this, that knows what the heck is
going on with Word 2003? I am very frustrated.

Hi Terry-

I appreciate your frustration... MS harps on 'consistency' for years and
then goes and changes things. Perhaps this will help.

The Minimize button (DocMinimize in the All Commands category of commands)
_does_ work, but it does not position in the traditional location. It must be
placed on a toolbar. However, you can create a custom toolbar with the
buttons you want and dock it in the upper right corner if you wish & just
leave it there.

This works, too. While the Customize dialog box is open, right-click the
'Type a question' box to open a 1-item menu. Click that item to remove the
check, which turns off the question box... but it just doesn't disappear
while the Customize dialog box is open. When you click Close out of Customize
the 'Type a question' box will be gone. You can then reposition your
'minimize toolbar' more precisely.
Hopefully there is someone out there smarter than the help
people. Can someone please help me with this, that knows what the heck is
going on with Word 2003? I am very frustrated.

Good Luck |:>)

If what you mean by 'traditional location' is on the same 'line' as
the menu bar then you need to be using MDI (Multiple Document
Interface) rather than SDI (Single Document Interface).

SDI was introduced in Word 2000. SDI means each open document utilizes
its own application window/toolbars/menu bar and appears as a task on
the Windows taskbar. To minimize the document use the only minimize
command that is visible - the one on the title bar.

MDI, used in Word 97 and previous versions, means all documents share
the application window/toolbars/menu bar and all open documents appear
in one task on the Windows taskbar. Since mulitple documents are
sharing the same interface each document has its own
minimize/maximize/restore command and the documents appear minimized
in the application interface - not on the Windows taskbar.

Switching the document interface is easily changed by going to
Tools/Options/View and turning on/off "Windows in taskbar".

btw, utilizing the DocMinimize command on a toolbar will exhibit the
same behavior as using the minimize command as I previously described.
