Min/Max-Function for Strings

Hello,
I am looking for two functions that compute the smallest respectively
the greatest value of a list of strings (text values). The buid in
functions MinA and MaxA can handle numbers in text-format but do not
seem to work for real strings such as names.

This will return the most frequent occurring item for
A1:A10:

=INDEX(A1:A10,SUM(N(COUNTIF(A1:A10,A1:A10)=MAX(COUNTIF
(A1:A10,A1:A10)))))

Array-entered, meaning press ctrl/shift/enter.
