Mime/helper applications

Having problems opening certain file types in Explorer. For example, when I click on a link to a PDF, the file does not open, I just get an icon with an 'x' in it in the upper corner. Same thing happens with some .js files. (i.e. countdowns, page counters, etc.). I've been trying to find a way to reset MIME types/helper applications, but can't seem to. Any suggestions?
