in migrating files to a new computer can you use a
firewire or usb cable rather trhan a serial to serial
cable as suggested in the how to section of the windows
home page(the article was dated for 2001, so im skeptical)
i built my first computer and i want to transfer file
from the old(xp home oem) to the new(xp pro)
thanks for your help

yes i do..i thought u could use that rather than the floppy as they suggested...but i thought it would be easier and quicker (as they also suggested) via a direct connection...of course it might have seemed easier to them(laughs)they said have plenty of floppies on hand(cute little things are like endangered species)
frankly...it would seem that if a serial to serial cable connection would work..then usb would work
im just a wee nervous as the last parts of my new 'puter arrive

Do you have a small hub and network cards in each of the
pc's? That would be a very inexpensive setup to put
together if not.

not a network card per sae...just ethernet..in both no hubs

Caity,

in that case you can obtain a crossover cable (see
http://www.michna.com/kb/EthernetCrossoverCable.htm for
details), or you could obtain a switch and two normal Ethernet
patch cables. The switch would allow you to connect a third and
subsequent computers, the crossover cable only works for two.

There is another, somewhat difficult alternative. You could move
the entire installation and keep all installed software and
settings and data, but this is not very simple. If you want to
go that way, please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxMove.htm.

If you have a network connection between your computers, but
have problems to get them to communicated, please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm. For the easiest way you
may want to set Windows XP Professional to Simple File Sharing.
(XP Home only has Simple File Sharing, so that should match
easily.) You could then copy data through the Shared Documents
folders on both machines.
