I recently got a PC with a newer version of XP Home. I am "retiring" my old
PC, on which I had installed XP Pro. However, when I attempted to install the
XP Pro on my new PC (on top of XP Home) I got the warning: "You are about to
install an older version of the operating system. Continue?" (or words to
that effect). I have a few questions please.

1) Can I do this successfully?

2) SHOULD I do this?

3) What are the ramifications vis-a-vis my old PC? Since I don't intend to
use it anymore, does it matter that I installed XP Pro onto the other machine?

4) What things do I need to know in order to do this properly.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Hi Dennis,

Yes, you can probably do this successfully. You will, however, need to
create an XP Pro install CD that has been slipstreamed with SP2. Here are a
couple of sites that contain instructions for creating a bootable
slipstreamed XP CD:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

If and when you install XP Pro onto the new computer, you will need to
completely remove it from the old computer, as per the EULA:

"You may move the Product to a different Workstation Computer. After the
transfer, you must completely remove the Product from the former Workstation
Computer."
