Might be bad sector

I found some corrupt files and deleted them but now performance is slow on
some applications. When I try to run error-checking with "scan for and
attempt to recover bad sectors" on the hard drive, it locks everything up
about phase 4 of the scan. I've run spyware and virus checkers and nothing
was detected. Is there another program or something I can use to look for
bad sectors?

As the first step, type chkdsk /r in a command prompt and Y to run on
reboot. Reboot and let it run. The report will be in the Winlogon event
item in Application events in event viewer.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, look for the manufactures diagnostic
for your hard drive.
