Might be a bug in Evaluate Formula?

Enter the following array formula to cell A2:
=IF(TRUE,IF(MAX(ROW($1:1)*ISNUMBER(A$1:A1))=0,1,2),3)
Use Ctrl-Shift-Enter to enter since it's an array formula.

It runs without any issues but when you try Tools->Formula
Auditing->Evaluate Formula, Excel 2003 crashed on the first step, which is to
evaluate ROW($1:1).

If you enter the formula as a regular one, no crash when evaluating.

If I remove the outer IF, no crash when evaluating.

I haven't tried it on other versions of Excel. I am just wondering if this
is a bug and the problem can be reproduced.

I can crash my version of Excel (2002) *at will* using Tools>Formula
Auditing>Evaluate Formula. It happens when evaluating certain types of array
formulas. I've learned what formulas will cause this and avoid evaluating
them this way.

My version of Excel is up to date with all patches, so what causes it...???
Is it a bug...??? It is to me.

In fact, just about a week ago I was evaluating a rather simple and short
formula. I can't remember exactly what the formula was but it was very
short. Maybe this long:

(...........................................................)

and the array was only about 5 cells and it crashed. I just shook my head
and said man, you've got to be kidding me!

This is very frustrating. Otherwise that is a very useful tool.
