Migating 98 to XP - Peer-Peer Question

I should know, I used to know, but......

I'm migrating W98 machines to XP.
Novell network.
Same workgroup, different IP addresses.
Using a little router to connect the 2 machines, no problem - share the old
PCs "C" drive, connect to old PC (run: \\oldcomputername) from new PC. Drag
and drop - couldn't be easier.

Well, I remember doing this same thing with just a crossover cable. High
visibility so I don't want to fumble around CAN I just connect directly
with a crossover cable, share the "C" drive of the old one and basically so
the same thing as with a router?
Thanks to anyone kind enough to help.

John,

You can do connectivity and file sharing that way - but note a few details.

# Be sure to setup TCP/IP properly. Without a DHCP server, you need to make the
proper settings manually.
# Be aware of the challenges of seeing Windows 9x and Windows XP computers from
each other.

# Be aware of the process of setting up file sharing permissions between Windows
9x and Windows XP.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
