Microsoft's role in Biometric windows authentication???

I was wondering if anyone knows and can tell me where Windows XP stands as
far as supporting biometric devices. I am working on a project and trying to
do a little research. I am working with Windows XP Pro on some IBM Thinkpads
( T42 ). These laptops are headed to some field users and need to be a
little more secure against theft AND unauthorized access in case they are
able to access our network. Biometrics seems to be my next step to look
into. So, if anyone has any information or any experiences please send them
my way.
Thanks!
