Microsoft XP OS (in general)

I have worked my way from Win95, NT & Win98 for the last 7
years & consider myself a reasonably competent computer
user. All the while I have learned the foibles of these
various operating systems & coped well with keeping them
running smoothly.

Recently I bought 3 laptop computers, one for myself & 2
others for family members, all of them are from different
well known manufacturers.

The purpose of posting to this board is to say that in my
7 years of taking the trouble to learn how to care for &
keep my systems running smoothly I have NEVER come across
as many problems & crashes as we now have from all 3 new
computers, all are installed with the new Microsoft virus
named XP which masquerades as an operating system. And
yes, I did take the time to study the manual & set up the
machines the way we want them.

Microsoft can list as many "fix its" as they like on their
site but who the hell has the time to comb through
mountains of updates in order to get their normal day's
work done -- I certainly don't.

The product is a disaster; it came without choice pre-
installed on all our computers & is not worth whatever the
computer manufacturers paid for it.

It may be a retrograde step but I am seriously considering
going back to NT or Win98 or get rid of this M'soft stuff
altogether to go with something that works.

Mine works perfectly. And I don't install updates. The betas worked perfectly. The only bugs are the same bugs in 2000 and ME that MS refuse to fix.

You bought three cheap laptops that have OEM modified
versions of W XP on hardware of often dubious quality.
Perhaps the way you set them up is what is causing the
problem.

WinXp has a mind of its own - very clever Wizards, and
advanced IP addressing etc etc etc.
There are many things I used to do manually, that get
cocked up now - but if I let WinXp sweat for me,
it works ok.
I am a retired IT Consultant, who ran his own Company
for 10 years after 25 years in the Industry.
At first I had the same attitude as you - Xp made me
redundant, UNTIL I realised that I had more time for
the smarts it offers!

I wouldn't go back to Win 98 if you paid me.

preinstall a crippled OS. Then Microsoft has to get the flack from
the non-informed such as yourself.
