Each time i save a word document, i get a fresh icon on my desktop.WHy is
that? they only vanish when i close the document that i am working with, so
my desktop is covered with about 20 icons if i am writing an essay and saving
as i go

They are "temporary files" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632) that Word
needs in order to keep track of your work.

They only reason they appear on your desktop is that the document itself is on
the desktop. Store the document in any other folder, and the temporary files
will go into that folder -- you won't see them unless you specifically open that
folder.
