Microsoft Word alphabetizing document titles in directory

J

James

I have been using Word for many years. My laptop has always defaulted
to alphabetically ordered file names. Today for no apparent reason,
all file names became randomly organized? or at least organized
without respect to alphabetical order.

I have looked through the archives of the group, tried everything I
can find, looked through all on-line and built-in help menus, and have
found nothing that can help me change the directory back to the
default alphabetically arranged listing of file names for my
documents. I have Word documents and others, and until today they were
all alphabetically organized. I am working on a very big project and
the absence of alphabetically organized files is making it virtually
impossible to continue. Can someone please help me out here???

Thank you and regards,

James

Hi, James. In Word, click on File | Open, then click on the "Name" column heading to sort by that column.

Garfield has given you the answer you need, but note that the files are not
randomly ordered. In addition to "Name" (alphabetical or reverse
alphabetical order), files can be arranged (in ascending or descending
order) by Date, Type (.doc, .dot, .rtf, etc.), or Size.

One extra step may be needed (to Garfield's Reply). Use File, Open and make
sure that you are in 'Detail View'. Then you will see column Headers.
Clicking on the headers will sort the dialog into the order of the column
selected, i.e. date order or alphabetical order, etc. But you need to be in
Detail View before you see the column headers.
