Microsoft Wireless Desktop 7000 & Vista Business Bluetooth Problem

Clean install of Vista Business on a new Dell Dimension desktop with 4GB of
RAM and no other programs other than Office Small Business 2007, Windows Live
OneCare, and IntelliPoint & IntelliType 6.1.

All Microsoft Update patches are current.

After the initial installation of the Desktop 7000 set (which went off
without a hitch) both the mouse and the keyboard will stay connected and work
well for a day or two and then just die, for no apparent reason, making me
have to go through the "re-pairing" process again and again. By the way, I'm
only utilizing the built-in Vista Microsoft Bluetooth stack; there were no
Dell WIDCOMM drivers since the unit came with no native Bluetooth hardware.

After that all is well for between 24 & 48 hours, then the process will
repeat.

Usually it manifests itself upon boot-up, but it also tends to happen when
the computer wakes-up from sleep mode, which I don't allow it to go into very
often.

In trying to troubleshoot I moved the Microsoft Bluetooth transceiver
(version 3.0) to the USB port in the side of the Dell flat panel monitor,
thinking that its near proximity to the mouse and keyboard might improve
things, but it didn't; the behavior was the same as before, when it was
plugged into a USB 2.0 port in back of the computer.

There's a garden-variety Linksys Wireless-G router about 3 feet away, but I
don't think that could be causing any problems, at least none that have been
reported so far.

I'm loath to believe it has anything to do with the basic hardware, because
when it works it works great; it just refuses to continue to do so from one
(or two) day to the next.

To add to the mystery, I have this exact same Microsoft "Desk Set" on an
older Dell Dimension with XP Professional, Office 2003 Small Business, Live
OneCare, as well as a bunch of other programs and it hasn't missed a beat in
over 6 months; not once has the mouse or keyboard lost connectivity or has
had to be "re-paired" with the Microsoft dongle (transceiver), and that box
gets twice as much use as this new one with Vista on it.

What the Devil gives here?

Any input or suggestions would be welcome.

Possible Causes
--------------------
This issue can occur due to the following reasons.

-Wireless Interference.
-Depleted batteries.
-Loss of Synchronization.
-Use of Port Replicators, hubs, and third party adapters etc

Suggestions
-------------------
Perform these troubleshooting steps and this may help in resolving the issue.

Step 1: Check for Interference:
------------------------------------------
Items such as Radio, Cell Phones, desktop fans, Fluorescent lights, Large metal objects,
including computer cases and metal furniture may interfere with the signal of the mouse.
Please keep the items away from the mouse and check the behavior of the mouse.

I also suggest you to check out the following Microsoft Online Knowledge Base Article:

Wireless Keyboard or Mouse May Not Respond or May Respond Intermittently
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821805

If you have connected the receiver using a green USB to PS/2 converter, then please
try removing the adapter and connect the USB connector directly.

Step 2: Use fresh Energizer batteries:
-----------------------------------------------------
Let us ensure to remove the existing set of batteries from the mouse compartment
and insert a new set of AA Alkaline batteries. Now see how the mouse works.

In case the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Try on different ports:
-----------------------------------------
Let us try the connection scenarios as mentioned in method 1 of the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

Wireless keyboard or mouse does not respond as expected:

After trying each connection scenario, try the steps in Method 3 of the same article
to synchronize the keyboard with the receiver.

I have exactly the same problem on Vista Ulltimate and XP pro. I have tried
removing the Intellpoint software, but when you reinstall and asked to remove
Bluetooth transciever, refit and hold button for 5 sec. plus, it just hangs
and does nothing, I have left it for 2 hours and nothing. The only way is to
add Bluetooth device and as you say it last, with me about 2 weeks. It's a
pity they didn't give any warnings about the interferance problems before
taking the £80.00. I am having to use a wired keyboard and mouse, incase I
need to boot into Bios or boot menu. Thats 2 mice & 2 keyboards defeats the
object in my view glad I didn't buy the Desktop 8000. Can any one sugest a
desktop set that works
