I currently have a P4 1.5ghz computer with a raid array
and Windows 2000 professional. I also have a brand new,
full edition of windows xp... I do not have the original
software disks for the windows 2000 but would like to know
my options but am having trouble finding out what is the
best configuration.

1. Can I create a new partition without the win2000
software so that I may install windows xp? If so, where
should I go for good, detailed information?

2. Is Windows XP Home compatible with my hardware? Is
there a report I can create of my system properties for
someone to analyze? (I'm sure there is, but not sure -
exactly - what to give you)

Thanks for your time and look forward to hearing from
someone.

Hardware RAID or software RAID ?

I don't think that WinXP HE can do RAID without a RAID controller.

1) You cannot create partitions using win* without destroying *all* files
You can use a third party tool, eg Partition Magic
2) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/default.mspx
for info. on compatibility.

If yr hd size is greater than 137gb and yr winxp install disk is not at
least sp1 then the install will not have support for the large hd. This can
be overcome but requires some thought.
The upgrade process may also depend on how yr Raid is configured/installed

With any upgrade you should ensure you have data backups

I wouldn't consider switching from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP
Home edition an upgrade at all. More like a downgrade. I can't even imagine
why one would want to make that change. Why burden your poor little 1.5 GHz.
P4 with all the excess baggage in XP Home?

That's an opinion -- not a fact. A P4 1.5GHz CPU will handle WinXPHE extremely well. I
have WinXP Pro running on IBM 600e notebooks and it surprised me , with sufficient RAM, how
well it actually worked.
