Does it give an error code when it fails? Have you looked in the event log
for any associated errors?

No error message from the update process. Looking in the System Error
log, I seem to be getting the following:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from
the Windows SteadyState service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Which Update ? When Windows Update fails it always give a code. You are looking in
the Event Viewer for the error and it is never there. Look in the Windows Update Log

I stand corrected. I was thinking 'update log' but typed 'event log' (stupid
fingers!).

Security Update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup
2 X86 Edition (KB2502898)

When it fails to complete t simply says "update failed" without giving
a reason. Where do I find the Windows Update Log?

Try and download it from the link below and install it manually
